Robert de Niro is in fine, menacing form as crazed knife salesman Gil Renard, for whom watching baseball has become more than just a pastime in this taut, psychological thriller. For Renard, baseball is "better than life" and the object of his affection is San Francisco Giants' star player Bobby Rayburn.
