Neil Jordan's BAFTA-winning film, taken from Graham Greene's novel, is set in wartime London and stars Stephen Rea as Henry Miles, who suspects his wife Sarah of having an affair. Confiding in his friend Maurice Bendrix, he little realises he is talking to Sarah's ex-lover who, stricken with jealousy at the thought of her with another, determines to find out whether she is having an affair and if he can re-claim her. Bendrix's feeling of loss, Miles' confusion at his wife's actions and her mysterious motives make this a compelling, character-driven film with an intriguing, surprising ending.
