Eighteenth century high society is buzzing with news of the marriage of young beauty Georgiana Spencer (Keira Knightley) to the older, yet infinitely eligible, Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes). At 17, Georgiana has a naïvely optimistic view of her future with the Duke, but the early years of her marriage couldn't be more different - or difficult. Despite winning the hearts of her nation, she soon discovers that the only man in Britain not infatuated with her is her own unfaithful husband.

Their relationship is further complicated when Georgiana fails to produce a male heir and the Duke takes her best friend, Lady Bess Foster (Hayley Atwell), as a mistress.
