Written by Harry Bates, Edmund H. NorthDirected by Robert WiseRunning Time: 95 minutes (approx)Production Year: 1951Rating: U CertificateProduction Country: USAFilmed in Black and WhiteThis genius sci-fi classic is about an extraterrestrial visitation in which a peaceful alien accompanied by a huge robot lands his impregnable spacecraft in Washington with a message of brotherhood - and a warning to mankind. The alien is Klaatu (Michael Rennie) and his mighty robot, Gort (Lock Martin) land their spaceship in Washington D.C during the time of the cold war. The pair have brought a very important message for the planet. Klaatu prepares to tell all the representatives of all the world's nations about this message, however, communication turns out to be more difficult than thought so when he is shot by a soldier on leaving the craft. Now the wounded Klaatu is taken to hospital from which he escapes to learn more about this war afflicted planet. While doing this he moves in with a young Earth family as their lodger. However they soon begin to suspect Klaatu, whom reveals himself, and his message of warning that if provoked, Gort will readily destroy Earth. This provocative film has been countlessly reported as being years ahead of its time. The score, by Bernard Herrmann is extremely memorable and the screenplay (Edmund H. North) is biting. Well remembered for the catchphrase: "'klaatu barada nikto" When is The Day The Earth Stood Still next on TV?
