William H Macy plays Bernie Lootz, a losing gambler who owes the Shangri-La casino in Las Vegas $100,000. To pay off his debt, he's used as a "cooler", someone who sits next to winners and uses his bad luck to stop them. He's almost debt-free when he falls for Natalie Belisario, a cocktail waitress as his luck improves: unfortunately, his new-found good fortune starts to rub off on the gamblers. He wants out, but casino owner and mobster Shelly Kaplow has other ideas in Wayne Cramer's fascinating study of two losers trying to get a life together.
