This disturbing classic follows a spoilt and rich socialit, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) who is also renowned for playing practical jokes on people.

Whilst in a pet shop in San Francisco she notices a gentleman who comes in called Muitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) who is wanting to buy a pair of love birds for his sister birthday. He notices Melanie and, pretending to mistake her for a shop assistant, asks her about them.

Put out by being mistaken as a mere shop assistant, instead of the person she so obviously appears to be, Melanie buys the only two love birds in the shop and drives them down to the quiet sea-side town of Bodega Bay where he lives at the weekends with his mother, Lydia (Jessica Tandy) and sister.

However soon into her stay she is attacked by a sea-gull, but this is only the beginning. Shortly the entire town gets bombarded by hundreds upon hundreds of birds that appear to have a grudge against the human inhabitants.
