Here's a lesson for anyone who thinks they've snapped up a bargain property. If it's way below the market price and the estate agents are desperate to give it away, it's probably haunted. That's certainly the case here when the Lutz family move to a big house in the New York suburbs which they bought at a bargain price. When they start to be terrorised by supernatural forces, they discover that the house was the scene of a recent mass killing and was also the home of an 18th-century satanist. Terrific.

A remake of the 1979 original, this 2005 horror film - starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George (pictured) - just about passes muster, but others within the original Amityville series are felt to be better.
