Young penguin Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf) wants to be a surfing champ just like his hero Big Z (voiced by Jeff Bridges). A behind-the-scenes documentary follows the little fella as he travels from Shiverpool in the Arctic to the Penguin World Surfing Championships to try and achieve his tube-riding dream. With the help of a zany chicken called Joe (voiced by Jon Heder), a slinky penguin lifeguard and her reclusive but surf-savvy uncle, Cody overcomes his newcomer nerves to become a serious penguin contender on Pen Gu Island.

Penguins have become the new darlings of Hollywood, and although Surf's Up isn't the first to cash in on the black and white cuties, it's definitely one of the top offerings. The documentary style, complete with grainy archive footage, gives it a fresh new twist and the cast (who, unusually for an animated film, recorded their parts in a studio together) boasts some of the most up-and-coming names in Tinseltown as well as stalwarts like Bridges.
