Superman Returns (2006)Written by Michael Dougherty, Dan HarrisDirected by Bryan SingerRunning Time: 148 minutes (approx)Production Year: 2006Rating: 15 CertificateProduction Country: Australia / USAFilmed in ColourThe Superman film franchise was always going to be a hard one to continue, but - 19 years on - X-Men director Bryan Singer does extremely well here. He's helped by the fact that new man of steel Brandon Routh looks uncannily like Christopher Reeve, and it's not a huge transistion from the old Superman to the new one. A back-to-basics approach, plus excellent support from Kevin Spacey as the deliciously evil Lex Luthor, Parker Posey as gangster moll Kitty Kowalski and Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, does the job marvellously. Superman (Routh) flies back to Earth after a mysterious five-year absence to find some things never change - and some things inevitably do. Evil Lex Luthor (Spacey) is plotting his next attempt at world domination by creating a Kryptonite-based mega-continent, and Superman is the only one who can stop him. But people have lost faith in their former saviour. Even Lois Lane (Bosworth) is living with a new man, has a child, and a Pulitzer Prize for an article titled Why the World Doesn't Need Superman...
