William Holden won Best Actor for his role as the black- hearted Sgt Sefton, who trades cigarettes with the German guards and takes bets against escape attempts. Sly casting by the late, great Billy Wilder gave martinet director Otto Preminger the part of the tyrannical camp commandant.
