It's 1927 and the world is about to wave goodbye to the silent-movie era. Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) are familiar to movie audiences for their on-screen romantic pairing, but life doesn't imitate art. When Don and Lina's latest film is transformed into a musical, Don's voice is perfect for the songs, but Lina needs to have her voice dubbed over. Aspiring actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) is brought in, and Don finds himself falling in love with her.

Kelly dancing to the title number in a downpour is probably the best-known sequence in this enchanting musical, but there are many other outstanding musical numbers to enjoy, including Good Morning, Make Me Laugh and Moses Supposes.
