To celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the VE Day celebrations, Sky Arts will show a collection of prominent artistic programmes which relate to the conflicts of the Second World War.

Humphrey Jennings's moving propaganda film, Silent Village, was set in Wales and was inspired by the massacre of 170 men in the Czech mining village of Lidice. In a defiant tribute to the fallen European miners, Welsh miners from Cwmgiedd helped create a film that identifies how the massacre, orchestrated by the Nazis, could have happened in any similar village in Europe.

Jennings creates a harrowing parallel of history, offering a frightening glimpse of what could have happened if Britain had been invaded by the Germans during the Second World War.
