Humphrey Jennings's moving propaganda film, Silent Village, was set in Wales and was inspired by the massacre of 170 men in the Czech mining village of Lidice. In a defiant tribute to the fallen European miners, Welsh miners from Cwmgiedd helped create a film that identifies how the massacre, orchestrated by the Nazis, could have happened in any similar village in Europe. Jennings creates a harrowing parallel of history, offering a frightening glimpse of what could have happened if Britain had been invaded by the Germans during the Second World War.
