Depressive writer and wine connoisseur Miles (Paul Giamatti, formerly Hollywood's best-kept secret) hits the road for a boys' tour of California's vineyards with his soon-to-be-wed pal Jack (Thomas Haden Church). But while Miles is there to forget about everything and experience the wonders of the grape, Jack just wants to sow his wild oats. Over an eventful week, they pair up with locals Maya (Virginia Madsen, Michael's sister) and Stephanie (Sandra Oh), then land themselves in all manner of bacchanalian bother.

Judging by its critical and box-office success, the bittersweet Sideways has an intoxicating effect on everyone who sees it. Laugh-out-loud episodes are punctuated with genuinely touching moments - a knack that director Alexander Payne showed in his acclaimed previous movies Election and About Schmidt. Here, Payne and his superb cast make every situation heartfelt and familiar; sometimes uncomfortably so: after Miles makes a drunken phone call to his ex-wife, Jack asks "Did you drink and dial?" We've all been there.
