Inspired by Hollywood, Sholay is India's best known "curry western". It ran for five consecutive years in a Bombay cinema and has recently been voted as India's most popular film in an online poll. Sholay is the tale of one man's fight for justice. In an act of retribution, cold-blooded criminal Gabbar Singh massacres the family of a police officer, Thakur Baldev. Left crippled by his enemy, Thakur is hungry for revenge but, seeing no way of bringing Gabbar to book, he hires two petty crooks, Veeru and Jai. The action-packed drama goes beyond Hollywood's western conventions and includes the musical interludes and high emotion that are essential in Indian popular cinema. Technical superiority, sturdy performances, excellent direction and now-immortal dialogue have put Sholay in a class of its own.
