Ike Graham (Richard Gere), is a less than respectable New York columnist. Graham's journalistic style is based around writing stories at the last minute and fabricating facts, a far cry from the honest, hard-working, investigative approach followed by most other journalists. Hmm.

He hears the story of Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts), a local lass notorious for leaving a succession of would-be grooms at the altar. When Graham writes an article based on Maggie, he is promptly fired by his publisher, who doubles as his ex-wife. Shut off from the hack pack, Ike is desperate for a way back in. So he heads for Maggie Carpenter. Why not kill two birds with one stone, as it were.

The two leads are backed up by other faces from Pretty Woman, including Hector Elizondo, along with some additonal talent, such as comedy veteran Joan Cusack (Addams Family, Grosse Pointe Blank). The film took some time in production, and several big names were attached to the project at various times including Harrison Ford, Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck
