Merchant/Ivory's film is based in New York's Roseland ballroom and, through three stories, tells the tales of those who come to dance in the old fashioned way. Central is Russel as a gigolo who courts Pauline, an ageing and dying widow, in the hope she will be enamoured of him enough to leave him her fortune. Geraldine Chaplin plays Marilyn, the wallflower who has her own desire that only leads to humiliation. Finally, Rosie comes to dance even though she knows the effort could kill her.
