Ageing war veteran Mickey Stern is reunited with the childhood sweetheart who he deserted many years earlier. The pair spend a blissfully happy year together, before the woman tragically dies. When Mickey visits the location where he first met his soulmate, he is amazed to discover a young man and woman who bear a striking resemblance to the couple as youngsters, and he becomes determined not to let the pair make the same mistakes as him.
