During the Vietnam War, German-born US pilot Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale, pictured) is shot down over Laos and taken prisoner. Tortured and starved, Dieter resolves to escape with fellow prisoners Duane (Steve Zahn) and Gene (Jeremy Davies). When they finally make their daring break into the jungle, the escapees discover that the dense, humid rainforest can be a terrifying prison in itself.

Based on a true story, director and writer Werner Herzog brings the tale to the cinema screen in an authentic and involving way. Bale shed a lot of weight (not for the first time) to take on the role of Dengler, and is grittily convincing as the single-minded soldier.
