David Stannard (Glenn Ford, pictured, centre) is faced with a half-million dollar demand when his son Andy (Bobby Clark) is kidnapped and held for ransom. But Stannard refuses to play ball - he goes on nationwide TV, displaying the cash and warning the kidnappers that not one cent will be paid unless Andy is returned unharmed.

David's belligerence is not popular within his own family, and then matters take a turn for the worse when police find the boy's blood-stained shirt.
