American engineer Peter Bowman (David Morse) has been kidnapped by rebel anti-government guerillas in a South America. The ransom has been set for an astonishing $6 million.

Unable to pay the ransom, his wife, Alice (Meg Ryan) enlists the help of a "freelance hostage negotiator," Terry Thorne (Russell Crowe).

Teaming up with a fellow negotiator, Dino (David Caruso), and a trio of trained mercenaries, Terry leads an effort to rescue Peter...
