A small mining community is threatened by grasping mine owner Coy La Hood (Richard Dysart), his son (Chris Penn) and his hired killers. Riding to the township's rescue comes a mysterious preacher (Clint Eastwood), who appears out of nowhere to join forces with the miners led by Hull Barrett (Michael Moriarty).

In his first Western since The Outlaw Josey Wales, director and star Clint Eastwood combines elements of his own High Plains Drifter (1972) with George Stevens's classic Shane.
