Jim Wormold is strictly a small-timer, a vacuum salesman trying to eke out a living in Cuba. Making the most of Wormold's debt-ridden daughter, shadowy Hawthorne recruits him as a spy. But Wormold doesn't have anything to report, so he makes it all up.
