This feelgood comedy drama focuses on Glasgow shipbuilder Frank (Peter Mullan, pictured), who struggles to regain his living and pride when he is laid off after 36 years of working on the docks. Determined to salvage his self-esteem and tackle his demons without the help of his wife Joan (Brenda Blethyn) and son Rob (Jamie Sives), taciturn Frank attempts a stern test of endurance by swimming the English Channel. Simultaneously his wife secretly tries her hand at becoming a bus driver.

Released in 2004 and directed by Gaby Dellal, at times it's a little predictable but succeeds due to the strength of unlikely hero Mullan along with plenty of warm-hearted laughs. Worth watching.
