This warm and humorous tale follows the story of an 11-year-old tomboy called Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) who lives with her widower father, Harry (Dan Aykroyd)

Harry is a mortician and the pair live in the funeral home where his 'offices' are kept and since her mother's death Vada has shared a morbid fascination with death.

Her dad soon falls in love again, with the new cosmetologist, Shelley DeVoto (Jamie Lee Curtis) at the funeral parlour where he works.

Along with fears that she may have been responsible for her mother's death, the girl is also troubled by her father's relationship, which seems to come between them. But she finds a best friend to help her cope with the confusion in the bosy of the hyper allergic Thomas J. Sennett (Macaulay Culkin).
