Starring Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe, this is a powerful fictionalised account of the murder in 1964 of three civil rights workers in America's Deep South and the FBI's subsequent investigation of Ku Klux Klan activities in the area.

The assigned agents battle to reconcile their contrasting approach to the assignment, one playing it by the book, the other relying on his instincts as a former sheriff in the South. The film won an Oscar for Best Cinematography.
