Legal thriller, starring George Clooney. Hardened lawyer Michael Clayton (Clooney, pictured) is known as a "fixer" in his high-powered New York law firm, for his incomparable ability to smooth over tricky cases for their corporate clients. When his colleague Arthur (Tom Wilkinson) starts to exhibit erratic and worrying behaviour while dealing with a big client's case, Michael is called in to take over. What he finds is a web of lies that throws up a serious ethical problem, but the callous corporate litigator Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton) is determined to keep the company's name clean at any cost.

The fact that Michael Clayton was nominated for seven Oscars, including plaudits for the three main actors, speaks for itself. Tony Gilroy, screenwriter of the Bourne trilogy, makes his directorial debut with a polished and classy thriller, but it is the fantastic actors and their star turns that make the movie. Tilda Swinton walked away with a Bafta and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
