Theresa Osborne (Robin Wright Penn) is a busy, city-based, single parent who works for the Chicago Tribune.

Whilst walking along a beach she discovers a letter in a bottle which has been written by a loving husband to his deceased wife. Theresa soon starts her journey to find the author of the letter. When she finally discovers him she discovers his name is Garret Blake (Kevin Costner) who is living a lonely and quiet life repairing sailing boats.

It is not long before love and understanding blossom.
