Tetsuya Nakashima's film's techniques have been compared to those of Amelie but with a more sombre story. Matsuko's story, from school teacher via yakuza moll to prostitute and eventually bag lady, is told in flashback by her teenage nephew Eita, who tracks down those she knew during her life in an effort to understand her death.
