Robert Mitchum shows the way for Clint Eastwood's screen persona in this tough Western drama. He plays a laconic, ruthless gunslinger in search of his estranged wife, who's hired to rid a small cattle town of bullying rancher. The film mixes all-out action with accelerated tension and an Old Testament approach to violence, but Mitchum remains cool and stone-faced throughout
