David Lean's melodrama stars Ann Todd as Madeline Smith, daughter of a prosperous family in Victorian Glasgow who conducts a clandestine affair with penniless Frenchman Emile L'Anglier. When she is betrothed to the more suitable William Minnoch, L'Anglier threatens to expose the relationship and ruin her. Soon after, he dies from poison and she stands trial for murder but is it murder or accidental death?
