This low-budget comedy was a big sleeper hit with audiences and critics alike. The ensemble cast gives a subtle and heart-warming performance, with some belly-laugh moments. Child star Abigail Breslin was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar at the 2007 Academy Awards, but it was veteran Alan Arkin who walked away with a statuette, for Best Supporting Actor.

Grandpa (Arkin) is addicted to heroin. Dad (Greg Kinnear) is a failing motivational speaker. Uncle Frank (Steve Carell) is a gay, suicidal professor. Son Dwayne hasn't spoken in nine months. Daughter Olive (Breslin) is overweight, plain and obsessed with winning a beauty pageant. Mum Sheryl (Toni Collette) seems to be the only one with any common sense in the mixed-up Hoover family. So when they all pile into their creaking VW bus to deliver Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine competition in far-off California, things were never destined to go smoothly...

Whilst it had humours bits I couldn't describe it as a comedy because I laughed exactly once through the entire movie.

If you must watch it then watch it as a satire and I'm sure you won't be disappointed ;)
