Chaplin comedy about a washed-out music hall star in London's East End who saves a ballerina from suicide and regains his own confidence as he nurses her back to health. As her star begins to rise, so his declines. But he enjoys a moment of triumph before the final curtain. This was Chaplin's last American film before his exile in Europe, and probably his most personal.
