Zampanò, a performer in a traveling carnival, purchases the poor, young Gelsomina to be his wife and assistant. She quietly endures a life of emotional coldness and cruelty; only Ilmatto, a quicksilver trapeze artist who befriends Gelsomina, offers her warmth and kindness. When Zampano, in a rage, accidentally kills Ilmatto, Gelsomina is plunged into despair, precipitating a tragedy that will haunt her husband forever.
