Dr. Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman) is a police detective in Washington D.C.

We soon see him travelling to a town in North Carolina to help the local authorities investigate the apparent kidnapping of his niece, Naomi Cross (Gina Ravera).

Stumped by the event, Cross is aided in his search by a former kidnappee who managed to escapoe her ordeal alive, her name, Dr. Kate McTiernan (Ashley Judd).

Now Cross hunts down the kidnapper who is using the title, "The Cassanova" and finds that he is responsible for a series of very gruesome murders involving young women - the only one who survived his toirment being Kate, Cross' last hope.
