Juno (2007)
Directed by Jason ReitmanRunning Time: 105 minutes (approx)Production Year: 2007Rating: 12 CertificateProduction Country: USA/CanadaFilmed in ColourSmart-mouthed 16-year-old Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) finds herself on an unexpected path when she gets pregnant by best friend Paulie Bleeker (MichaelCera). Refusing to be railroaded by anyone else's expectations, Juno decides to have the child adopted by a 'perfect' couple (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner). But is anyone really perfect? Last year's cinematic success story, Juno crept up on audiences to secure critical applause and awards aplenty, including an Oscar nomination for rising star Page and a win for stripper-turned-screenwriter Diablo Cody. Bittersweet and achingly cool, Cody's witfuelled, spitfire dialogue crackles in the mouths of the film's talented cast. But beneath the hype, is the dark horse deserving of the gushing praise? Undoubtedly. A charming coming-of-age tale sprinkled with cynicism, Juno finds the light and laughter in a subject - unplanned teenage pregnancy - that normally causes brows to furrow and hands to wring. Deciding against a Mike Leigh-esque downbeat approach, Juno maintains that humour is the best weapon in life's battles. When is Juno next on TV?
