"To peace," toasts weapons designer Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). As the whisky-swilling, skirt-chasing head of a billion-dollar business, he can afford to be glib, until terrorists gatecrash a rocket demonstration in Afghanistan and take him prisoner.

Despite an injury to his heart, the insurgents force Stark to reproduce his missiles. Instead, the designer builds an armoured suit to protect his heart and he escapes. No sooner has he found a pacemaker than he turns peacemaker, vowing to renounce war and punish the wicked. Enter Iron Man.

Troubled star Downey Jr., more famous for his addictions than his acting, is perfect as the wisecracking industrialist with the not-so-secret identity. After all the soul-searching of Peter Parker and Bruce Wayne, Hollywood has finally found a fully-loaded action adventure that puts the fun back into superhero films.
