Leading a seemingly perfect and happy life with her husband, Bill (Michael Paré) and daughter, Bernice (Mae Whitman) Birdee also shares a loving relationship with her best childhood friend, Bobby-Claire (Connie Ray). However all goes horribly awry when her husband and Bobby-Claire ask her to join them on a national talk show and there reveal to her that they are having an affair and want to be together full-time. Totally humiliated by this, Birdee returns home to her mother's house in small town Smithville, Texas to try and piece together her shattered life. Things don't go to plan however when, on her return, she is plagued with catty comments from all her old school acquaintances once so jealous of her beauty and popularity, yet now lapping up her decline and just love rubbing her face in the mess that has become her life. Desperately depressed by her current state of affairs she runs into an old boyfriend of hers, Justin Matisse (Harry Connick Jr.), who endeavours to help her through these difficult times. Yet he is secretly still deeply in love with her. Now the question remains; Will Birdee find happiness with Justin, or does she think life would be easier to bear with just herself and Bernice to think of? Cast
