Joan Crawford stars as the eponymous heroine, keeping both her family, including husband Walter, cousin Clare Raymond and grandmother Lottie and the timorous servants firmly under her thumb. But when Walter is offered a job that will mean more time away, and Clare falls in love with a man Harriet deems unsuitable, she will do anything to maintain the status quo and her reign. Crawford is superb as a domineering monster and director Vincent Sherman, helped by Crawford herself, ensured that the final cut emphasised her role at the expense of the others.
