Happy Gilmore (1996)Written by Tim Herlihy, Adam SandlerDirected by Dennis DuganRunning Time: 100 minutes (approx)Production Year: 1996Rating: 12 CertificateProduction Country: USAFilmed in ColourOne of Adam Sandler's earliest big-screen outings was in this rumbustious 1996 comedy as Happy Gilmore, the bad-boy ice-hockey player who fails to make the grade because he can't skate or control his temper. But he does have a powerful shot and realises he can hit a golf ball 400 yards. And when his gran's house is repossessed because she never paid tax, he agrees to take up golf to try and win enough money to buy it back. But he can't putt and the golfing establishment aren't happy to have this imperfect imposter in their finely-manicured midst... As tends to be the case with Sandler, the reviews were mixed, but MTV saw the light and gave Sandler and US The Price Is Right host Bob Barker the MTV Movie Award for Best Fight. Sandler's performance is firmly in the vein of subsequent successes The Waterboy and The Wedding Singer, and he gets some great lines as the laughs come thick and fast. And there's plenty more to enjoy here: Happy's coach Chubbs (Carl Weathers), the psychopathic staff at his gran's nursing home; Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), the pro who schemes to keep Happy off the tour; and 7ft 2in Richard Kiel (James Bond's old adversary Jaws from The Spy Who Loved Me) as Happy's frightening number-one fan. When is Happy Gilmore next on TV?
