This acclaimed 2004 comedy drama is the directorial debut of Zach Braff (pictured). Braff - who played Dr John Dorian in Scrubs - also wrote and stars in the film. He plays Andrew Largeman, an indifferent actor who lives on anti-depressants and hasn't been in touch with his family for nine years.

When his mother dies, he goes cold turkey and heads home to be confronted by his father Gideon (Ian Holm), who still blames Andrew for an accident that left his wife paralysed. Then he meets Sam (Natalie Portman), a free spirit who begins to crack his carapace. As the pair, with Andrew's old school buddy Mark (Peter Sarsgaard), set out on a journey through New Jersey to visit Mark's weird friends, Andrew begins to form a love and trust both for himself and others.
