Tommy, a struggling stand-up comedian, tries out an act in Las Vegas, but his egoistic father George derails the show. In frustration, Tommy scolds the audience, bolts from the stage and flees town. He goes back to his childhood home, the seaside vaudeville hub of Blackpool, England, in search of inspiration.
