Jamal Wallace (Robert Brown) is a very brash 16-year-old is one of the school's best basketball players whom is also a writing prodigy.

After a winning a state-wide standardized exam and is thus wanted by a prestigious Manhattan preparatory school.

William Forrester (Sean Connery) was a vibrant personality who wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning classic novel over foty years ago. This was the last the world heard of Forrester.. until now.

Known as the eccentric neighbourhood recluse, William is now a man of mystery. However when Jamal sneaks into his flat he accidentally leaves behind his backpack full of thoughts and writings.

Compelled to look past skin color and assumptions, Jamal encounters not only his first fan, but a mentor who will challenge and change him forever, giving him the get up and go to pursue his dream in writing. Forrester, on the other hand, has his first reason in years to emerge from his self-imposed solitude.
