Victorian melodrama centred around the arrival of a mysterious young woman in a formerly placid household of three brothers and their parents. When an unmarried mother with a dark past is rescued from a life on the streets by a well-meaning benefactor, a chain of events is set in motion which ultimately leads to tragedy. Based on a novel by H E Bates.
