Alice chastises her husband, accusing him of not admitting to his own fantasies, and this in turn sets him off on an ill-fated journey of sexual self-discovery. Bill starts to fantasise about both a patient's daughter and a prostitute, leading to unfulfilled sexual encounters. When he visits a nightclub, Bill learns about a covert sexual group. He attends one of their meetings and the film really begins to warm up. Perhaps not fully prepared for the activities that the group practises, Harford starts to realise that he is in well over his head and soon finds his family is also threatened. Although the off-screen relationship between Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman gives this film its rather grisly topicality, most movie lovers will remember it as the final picture of legendary director Stanley Kubrick, who died shortly before the release. It was a tragic loss to the film industry, following a career spanning four decades in which the reclusive New Yorker had delivered some of the most visionary pieces of film-making in cinema history. They say that Cruise and Kidman pushed the boundaries of their on-screen relationship months before they actually announced a real-life split.
