Cole Thornton (John Wayne) is a gunman for hire who rides into a small town called El Dorado, to work for cattle baron, Bart Jason (Edward Asner). However he turns down this job when he discovers that he would have to fight Sheriff J.P Harrah (Robert Mitchum).

As the sheriff is an old friend of Cole's, and the rancher wants to run his family off their land to get at a lucrative water supply this isn't acceptable to Cole and he quits.

Some months later he finds out that Sheriff Harrah has hit the bottle and a top gunfighter is heading his way to help Jason finish the job Cole refused to carry out.

Teaming up with his young Indian friend, Alan Bourdillion Traherne "Mississippi" (James Caan), who is handy with a knife and is now armed with a diabolical shotgun, and a gambler, Cole returns to help his friend's family fight the rival rancher that is trying to steal their water.
