This powerful and surreal psychological fantasy drama received lavish praise from the critics when it was released in 2001, but baffled a lot of filmgoers. It's definitely one of those movies that you either love and would include in your all-time top five, or watch once, wonder what all the fuss was about, and vow never to see it again.

It's certainly well made, impressively acted and is a highly original picture, but maybe - in hindsight - the praise and hype that surrounded it now seems a little unfounded. Either way it's definitely worth seeing, if only so that you can make your own mind up.

During the presidential election of 1988, teenager Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) sleepwalks out of his house and sees a giant, demonic-looking rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world will end in 28 days. When Donnie returns home, he finds that a jet engine has crashed into his bedroom. Is Donnie living in a parallel universe, is he suffering from mental illness - or will the world really end?
