Dexter Cornell (Dennis Quaid) is a disillusioned Professor of English whom becomes embroiled in a series of murders involving people around him.

Dexter awakens one morning to find he has been poisoned by a slow-acting toxin. Now with a race against the clock he finds himself retracing his footsteps to find the person who is murdering him.

With the hep of a besotted college student of his, Sydney Fuller (Meg Ryan), Dexter traces the poison only to find himself caught up in a nasty labyrinth of deception and murder.
