Control (2007)
Directed by Anton CorbijnRunning Time: 120 minutes (approx)Production Year: 2007Rating: 15 CertificateProduction Country: UK/USAFilmed in ColourMuch acclaimed and moving biopic of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, who battled depression and epilepsy before taking his own life. In late 1970s Macclesfield, a youthful Ian Curtis (Sam Riley) loses himself in music and drugs, dreaming of an escape from his humdrum life. His chance comes with local band Warsaw, who, renaming themselves Joy Division, soon begin making waves on the Northern music scene. Championed by local TV impresario Tony Wilson (Craig Parkinson), Joy Division take off, leaving behind Ian's young wife Deborah (Samantha Morton) and baby. An affair with a music journalist makes a bad situation worse, and domestic strife, coupled with Ian's increasingly debilitating epilepsy, lead the depressed singer to take his own life. Based on Deborah Curtis's memoir of her turbulent marriage, Control is an emotionally devastating portrait of love and despair. The monochromatic imagery gives the kitchen-sink settings a beauty that reflects debut director Anton Corbijn's background in rock photography and music videos. And while relative newcomer Riley delivers an uncanny performance as the doomed musician, Morton is the heart of the film, her wide-eyed naivety revealing every painful moment of a young bride's world being shattered. A must-see for any film or music fan. Highly recommended. When is Control next on TV?
