The dishevelled detective is called in to investigate when chain-smoking TV producer Budd Clarke is found dead at his home, apparently the victim of a massive heart attack. Columbo suspects that Clarke's former partner Wade Anders, the host of a crime-busting TV series, is implicated. But Anders has a seemingly watertight alibi, which just happens to be captured on video tape.
