A compulsive gambler with a mountain of debts comes up with a plan to make some easy money. He plants a bomb under his wealthy uncle's car, hoping to bump the old boy off and inherit his loot - but a hit-and-run driver jeopardises the entire scheme and it isn't long before the slovenly cigar-chewing sleuth is sniffing around for clues.
